Commercial radio communication was first started to provide communication between ships and coastal stations. There was a well-developed telegraph network available already in 1900. Guillermo Marconi, who came from Italy, understood the importance of communication between ship and land. He developed both transmitters and receivers and built a company to provide equipment and staff.
